Who plays Mr Molloy in Sex Education Season 4

In addition to the exciting news that Sex Education Season 4 is well into production, there’s also a new character being introduced called Mr Molloy, so you might be wondering who plays him. The actor is pretty well known, but only if you’re a fan of hilarious Canadian sitcoms, so its easy to recognize the face, but not be able to land the name.

Mr Molloy will be making his debut in Season 4 when it lands on Netflix in September 2023, and he’s going to be working pretty closely with Maeve as she embarks on her transatlantic educational voyage of discovery. For anyone who’s a little hazy on how Season 3 ended, Maeve decided to take the place at the study program in the United States, despite her and Otis finally getting together.

We’re expecting Mr Molloy to feature in the very first episode of Sex Education Season 4. By the look of the image above he’s going to be pretty important on the US side of the cast. Who is the actor that plays Mr Molloy

For anyone not up on their Canadian sitcom knowledge, the reference above is to Schitt’s Creek, which was where Dan Levy made his big break. He’s been pretty busy with the show since it first aired way back in 2015, so his role as Mr Molloy in Sex Education Season 4 is probably his biggest acting part since it finished in 2020.

In the show he played David Rose, the son of a rich family that loses the majority of its wealth, leaving them with just a town in Ontario called Schitt’s Creek to their name. They’re forced to move to the backwater location and so the comedy ensues.

They all find it pretty unbearable to transition from their previous life of luxury and excess to the more meager offerings of the only motel in town. Over the course of the six seasons, it went from cult comedy gold to international hit, which culminated in 2020 with the final season picking up a total of nine Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Dan Levy.

However, Levy wasn’t just one of the main cast members; he also co-created, wrote, directed and produced the show with his dad Eugene Levy, who you might recognize as Noah Levenstein from American Pie. As a result, he also snagged Emmys for all of the above for the final Season, giving him a total of four to his name, so he’s clearly going to be a big addition to Sex Education.

Who is Mr Molloy?

Mr Molloy and Maeve in Sex Education Season 4

We know just three things about Mr Molloy so far… his name, his location and a vague approximation of his occupation. The name and US location we’ve already covered, but if you look at the image above it’s pretty clear that he’s going to be a big part in Maeve’s study programme in the States.

This means that either he’s her tutor, teacher, program liaison dude or counselor. There’s a certificate on the wall in the picture above with Emma Mackey as Maeve, but it’s not clear enough to make out what it’s for. Although, it does look like his full name might be Thomas Molloy.

The teachers at Moordale have been pretty ridiculous throughout the opening three seasons of the show, so we’re expecting Mr Molloy to have his moments too. The character looks a lot like David from Schitt’s Creek, so it’s going to be interesting to see whether or not the two are similar, or if he tries to act the part differently.

What else has the actor starred in?

Dan Levy hasn’t really had that many big acting roles outside of Schitt’s Creek, so Sex Education is definitely going to be a big one for him. There’s no confirmation as of yet, but we’re expecting him to pick up writing and or directing credits in Season 4 to go with his part as Mr Molloy.

He starred as John alongside Kristen Stewart and Aubrey Plaza in the Hulu original film, Happiest Season, which was a holiday rom-com in 2020. He was also the host of the Great Canadian Baking Show between 2017 and 2018, as well as an episode of Saturday Night Live in 2021.
