God of War Ragnarok how to beat Gryla

God of War Ragnarok how to beat Gryla

With so many bosses in the mix, we always had our hopes out for a giant fight in God of War Ragnarok, and we got it, so here are our tips on how to beat Gryla. It’s a troubled and complex battle, because there’s a lot of emotion involved, especially for Angrboda, who is her granddaughter.

Gryla is also a tormented individual that takes the souls of creatures due to her sense of loss and the mental anguish that she has suffered. It makes it one of the most emotive boss fights in the game with a strong ending to go with it.

To steal sould, Gryla uses a magical cauldron and this features heavily in both her attacks and how Atreus and Angrboda go on to defeat her. It’s also one of the first boss fights that includes elements of climbing as you’ll need to use different ledges throughout the scrap.

How to beat Gryla and smash her soul bowl?

After you get thrown to the floor by Gryla, you need to follow the tunnel to get back to her kitchen to complete Angrboda’s plan to smash the bowl and stop the elderly giantess from taking any more souls. You drop into the kitchen and you need to get Atreus to swing across to the bowl.

As he starts to damage it with his knife with a circle button mash, Gryla swats him out of the way and back down to the floor. You can then use Angrboda to build up stun and then use Atreus to hit the runes on her cauldron.

Do this a few times and the cauldron will let out an energy blast and stun the giantess, making her slump to the ground. This is your chance to get in quickly and start attacking the bowl some more.

The aim is to break the bowl, which is how to defeat Gryla, so you’ll need to do this a few times to get the job done. After the first stun, she’ll get some new projectile attacks, which she throws out from the bowl, but you should be able to dodge these pretty easily and it’s the same for the running foot stomp.

You’ll be back to shooting arrows at the runes on the bowl to draw another stun opportunity, but she builds to her other big move, which is an area attack on the whole floor. This is where you need to climb up onto the kitchen surfaces to get away from it with the grapple function.

You can still keep on firing at the runes from up on the kitchen top and shortly after you get up there Angrboda will notice a candle she can use to stun Gryla even more. Direct the shot with square and you’ll get an easy shot at the bowl to add even more stun.

Grapple to other surfaces to repeat the process and shoot out any of the energy orbs that she conjures up. Square on the candle, shots to the runes and she’ll drop down once again to give you an opening to attack the bowl some more from the floor.

Now that you’re back down low, you’ll need to aim for the candles and again direct Angrboda with square. This will give you free shots at the bowl runes. You can grapple back up to the counter too, but the area impact move Gryla does can switch to the higher ledge, so jump down if it does.

Cycle, rinse, repeat and you should be able to cue up the R3 move on the bowl to beat Gryla. With the bowl smashed she can no longer take souls and wreak her havoc to the creatures around her house.

You don’t kill Gryla, instead, you leave her in dismay shouting in anger after Angrboda. It shows how weird things have been for Loki’s newfound friend, whose parents died when she was still young.
