Hogwarts Legacy how to get the Graphorn to appear at the den if it’s empty

Hogwarts Legacy how to get the Graphorn to appear at the den

A big part of the magic of Howarts Legacy is the fantastic beasts you can find, which is why you might be wondering how to get the Graphorn to appear at its den when it’s empty. When you eventually track it down in the very south east of the map, you’ll find that it’s completely empty, leaving you with no options to add the Graphorn to your Vivarium.

During the beasts tutorial section of Hogwarts Legacy, you’re told that some creatures only appear in their den at a certain time of day or you just need to wait for them, but that’s not the case for the Graphorn. This one’s a little more complicated than all of the others, so we wanted to prevent you from spending hours or even days repeadly trying the location for signs of movement.

The reality is that you need a decent amount of Graphorn Horn in order to upgrade your gear, so it’s easy to become obsessed with finding the den and then doing everything you can to get a Graphorn to appear. While you can pick up a horn every now and again from the Brood and Peck shop in Hogsmeade when you unlock it, you definitely need more of them, so you’ll have to sort things out with the den to add the charging beast to your Vivarium.

Why the Graphorn den is empty

It’s east enough to make it to the south east coast relatively early on in the game, especially if you’re on the hunt for beast dens to upgrade your gear. As a result you can discover the Graphorn location way before you’ll be able to unlock it as a den you can use to add then to your Vivariums.

To unlock it and make a Graphorn appear you need to progress the story a hell of a lot, so if you’ve been checking the den you’ll save yourself a lot of time by just focusing on main quest progression. The quest that you’re looking for is to meet Professor Fig at San Bakar’s Pensieve chamber, which is the last of four trials you need to complete to get the memories from the portrait professors from the past linked to the ancient magic story.

It will take you around ten plus hours to get to this point and there are a lot of main quests to complete before it becomes active, so for the majprity of the game you’ll need to keep heading back to Brood and Peck to get Graphorn Horn. In fact the quest to meet Professor Fig at San Bakar’s Pensieve is really close to the Hogwarts Legacy final boss fight, so it will only really be beneficial for your preparation for that.

The reason for this is that the Graphorn is the final mount that you unlock in the game, so it’s built into the pacing of new fun things to do. It’s the biggest beast in the game. You ride it on the ground and it’s got a charge attack, so you can use it to attack enemy camps or other beast enemies like the Acromantula or Trolls.

How to get a Graphorn to return to its den

When you make it to the point in Hogwarts Legacy where you need to meet Professor Fig at San Bakar’s Pensieve you’ll need to head to the far south east of the map. By this time you should have made it to this area, but if not you can watch the video below to see how to get to the coast in the game.

The den is next to the sea south of Cragmore Castle and the meetup point is a little further north, but you’ll get map markers to follow as part of the quest. When you meet Professor Fig you’ll quickly work out that you need a Graphorn to unlock San Bakar’s seal, so Professor Fig will send you off to the den that you’ve probably already discovered on your own.

This time, though, you won’t be frustrated to find it empty because it will trigger a cut scene with the Graphorn padding across the sand from behind the craggy rocks. It’s slow walk will turn into a charge and it will trigger one of the best boss fights in Hogwarts Legacy as you’ll need to weaken it before you can add it to your lust of mounts.

The magical dodge backwards will keep you clear of its attacks and then you can get in your combos to build up your Ancient Magic to do some big damage on the Graphorn. This can be huge if you apply the Ancient Magic trait, allowing you to breeze through the boss fight and add the beast to your mount roster, which you can see in the video below.

At the end of the fight you will then get the option to either overpower it or bow to it, which only affects the cut scene that you get and doesn’t have any other impact in the game. After you take the Graphorn back to Professor Fig and open the way to San Bakar’s Pensieve you can then add it to your Vivarium back in the Room of Requirements.

There’s also a breeding function in Hogwarts Legacy, so you can go back to the Graphorn Den and now that it’s active more of them will appear. You can now catch then with the Nab Bag and get a couple for your Vivarium to breed them like the other fantastic beasts.
