Avatar 3 cast list latest

Avatar 3 cast

With the success of the first sequel, we’re expecting big things from the next movie, so here’s everything we know so far about the Avatar 3 cast to give you more of an idea about who plays who. This will also include the latest news and rumors we have on the cast, so we’ll be adding more names to the list in the build up to the release date.

The third film in the ambitious Avatar movie series has already been given a release date, so we know that it’s set to come out in December 2024. This means that there’s still plenty of time for more cast members to be confirmed, but there’s already plenty to take from how things came to a close at the end of The Way of Water.

If that isn’t enough, we also have a few early cast announcements from the production, so we’ve already got a good idea about who’s going to be in the next film. As we’ll be discussing Avatar 3 we’ll inevitably talk about what happened in the second film, so if you haven’t seen it yet you might want yo do that before reading more, but it’s your call.

Avatar 3 cast assumptions

Firstly, we know that the only major loss in the cadt is Jamie Flatters, who played Jake and Neytiri’s teenage son, Neteyam, in Avatar 2. The character was shot dead by Quaritch towards the end of the film and they held a funeral to say goodbye, so we’re assuming he won’t be in the cast list.

However, with the spiritual connection of the Pandoran people, there’s always scope for a scene featuring Neteyam, or some kind of flashback memory scene to show the ongoing loss felt in the family. As things stand, we haven’t added Jamie Flatters to our cast lidt for 3, but we’ll update this if there’s a change with the trailer or the film release in 2024.

You’ve only got to look at the return of Sigourney Weaver in The Way of Water after her character died in Avatar to see that James Cameron doesn’t like to let people go. The fact that he has so much CGI firepower behind him means that he’s got a lot of free reign in terms of his decision making, so even when a character dies he’s still got a lot of options for the cast.

This is added to by the fact that the consciousness of the Na’vi people lives on after their death, which we saw in Avatar 2 during Kiri’s link to the underwater Spirit Tree. If she was able to see the spirit of Grace then it should work for Jake and Neytiri in the next film to see Neteyam.

Other than this situation, we’re assuming that the majority of the cast will be back in Avatar 3 with Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana as the lead characters of Jake and Neytiri. Quaritch should go on to be the main antagonist once again, but with a little more emotional complexity with the whole Spider thing playing out even more.

It also feels like we’re very much at the beginning of the RDA’s second wave on Pandora, so that should be a big part of the next movie. We’re also expecting more Na’vi tribes to add to the complexity, so that leads us on to the new additions to the cast

New additions and who they might play

To start with, we already have three confirmed new cast members for Avatar 3 and we know what character they’re going to play, which adds to our expectations for the next film in James Cameron’s massive sci-fi odyssey. The first big name is Michael Yeoh (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once) who will play Dr. Katrina Mogue, who sounds like an RDA researcher or scientist akin to Grace in the first film.

As it sounds like she’ll be on the invading side of the conflict it’s possible that she’ll be another villain, but that’s not really Michelle Yeoh’s MO, so we will probably get a character that bridges the gap with a certain amount of nuance built into her introduction and development.

The next big addition to the cast list is Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones, Taboo, Black Mirror) as Varang, who we’re assuming to be a new Na’vi character, probably from a whole new tribe that they introduce in Avatar 3. It’ll be interesting to see how the role comes together as Chaplin’s previous work has been pretty dark at times, so that could be the case again here.

Finally, we have Giovanni Ribisi (Friends, Gangster Squad, A Million Ways to Die in the West), but it’s far from a brand new role or character for him as he’s returning from the 2009 original. He also had a brief cameo in The Way of Water, but he’ll be back as a full member of the cast next time around.

If you don’t remember the character, he was the RDA admin dude that gave the order for Hometree to be destroyed, so we’re not expecting him to be an angel in the 3rd film. The cameo in 2 is clearly a reminder for his full return and with Quaritch returning as a Na’vi recombinant it at least a possibility for Giovanni Ribisi but the time all of the sequels have come out.

We’ll obviously be getting way more new cast members for Avatar 3 and we’ll update things here as we get official details about who the are and how they might fit into the story. New tribe members and RDA forces are the most likely roles to be added to the list below between now and the release date in December 2024.
