The second part in the series, Avatar: The Way of Water, is directed by James Cameron once again, and it features the same Jake and Neytiri from the first film. It continues their story as they are forced to move to a new location on the tropical moon of Pandora when the RDA return in force.

James Cameron’s visual spectacular got its first teaser in May, 2022, and then the full trailer followed a month later in early June. Both have done a good job of building the hype for the film. While reviews have been mixed, it’s definitely going to be on a lot of movie goers’ watch lists, especially with the Academy Award nomination for best picture and Oscar win for best visual effects.

If you’re wondering where else you can watch it other than the theater, and what the Avatar The Way of Water rent online release date will be, we’ll point you in the right direction for streaming and rental services below.

Home premier rental

The first opportunity to see a film at home is usually home premier rental, which is roughly around 45-60 days after the initial cinematic release date. If you track that forward for Avatar: The Way of Water, which came out on the 16th December 2022, then you would be looking at early to mid-February 2023 to rent it online, but that date has already come and gone with nothing in sight.

The film had a huge budget, and an even bigger first film to live up to, so it needed strong results at the box office, which meant that it had a pretty long run in cinemas. As a result, the timings for home media have been lengthy and unusual.

It’s taken things beyond the realms of Black Panther Wakanda Forever, which only became available to rent in North America in March, followed by a release in the UK a little later. It came out in cinemas on November 11th, 2022, so this was already enough to imply a similar delay for The Way of Water.

As both films are in the Disney fold it makes sense that they would follow similar schedules, so if Wakanda Forever took a while then the return to Pandora was likely to do the same. This would give it more time in cinemas and to allow purchase options and Disney+ to land well.

An announcement on the Avatar Twitter page on March 7th, 2023 confirmed that The Way of Water would be available on Digital in America on March 28th, 2023. However, this doesn’t include early access to rent online, so it’s just the purchase option that is available at the moment. It has since gone on to be available to buy digitally in the UK on April 3rd.

We’ve also had confirmation that it will be streaming on Disney Plus on June 7th, 2023 on both sides of the Atlantic. It’s possible that the production want to give it a chance to run on the platform before any rental options arrive.

Amazon Prime, iTunes and the Play Store normally have early access to cinema movies to rent, so these will be good options to watch Avatar 2 when it does come out. However, with the details above for the digital and Disney Plus release, it looks like it might skip this one and focus on sales initially over rental, which would include DVD and Blu-ray at a later date.

Avatar The Way of Water rent online release date

Avatar: The Way of Water is obviously going to look its most impressive in 3D on the big screen, but if you’re waiting on the standard digital rental then you’re probably looking at some time after the Disney Plus launch. Official news is still thin on the ground, apart from the digital purchase and streaming mentioned above, but we’ll update things here as soon as we find out anything about when it will be available to rent online.

After its premiere on the big screen on the 16th of December 2022, the digital release of Avatar 2 in the United Kingdom took place on April3rd, 2023 to buy. There’s still no word on the DVD or Blu-ray, but it’s looking like this will be post Disney Plus too. This should be a little earlier in North America, but you can read our DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date page for more information.

In general, it looks like the film has set out to focus on digital purchase to begin with and we probably won’t get anything else until it’s had enough time to land well. We’ll probably get more news on the other formats after it comes out on Disney Plus, so watch this space.

Standard price rent online usually becomes available a week or so after the DVD, Blu-ray and standard price digital purchase versions (although that’s not the case this time for digital). This means that we might be looking at June or later before you get the option on iTunes, Amazon Prime Video and the Google Play store.

However, there are a few things to take into account with the first being the impact on Disney+ subscriptions after it comes out. If it’s big then this could mean that you’ll have even longer to wait to rent the film at its more reasonable price point.

The fact that early access rental is still yet to land for The Way of Water means that we will probably see a similar delay for standard options. This is looking increasingly likely with the Black Panther Wakanda Forever situation adding to doubts.

Secondly, you also need to factor in the fact that’s it’s done incredibly well at the box office and there will have been plenty of tickets sold over the Easter break to keep the run going a little more. It may not be quite as successful as Avatar was, but it has still been given a lengthy run, which means that June is a possibility.

Where can I watch the film online?

After it has been released in theaters, Avatar: The Way of Water will go on to come out to stream online. The original Avatar film is already available to stream on Disney+ thanks to Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox, which should carry over for the second film too.

This will inevitably have an impact on the success of the UK and North America DVD, Blu-ray and digital download release. However, it looks like the film is prioritizing purchase options with the digital version, which came out in America on March 28th, 2023.

Is it possible to watch Avatar: The Way of Water on Hulu?

Many users might be interested in getting to see the movie on the streaming service Hulu. This is, unfortunately, not going to be the case unless you’ve got the Disney Bundle. This will give you access to Disney+ with the date range covered above. The Walt Disney Company is part owner of Hulu and has Marvel Studios in its fold, so this will be an option to watch Avatar The Way of Water online other than the digital purchase and rent online release on iTunes, Amazon Prime Video and the Google Play store.
