Introduction
The last film is now back at the top of the all-time box office sales records, so there was a fair amount riding on Avatar 2. The budget alone is pretty eye-watering, so the production needed to have a big run at the box office, which it has achieved, land well on DVD, Blu-ray and digital and have a big impact on Disney Plus too.
AdvertisementIf that isn’t enough pressure, director James Cameron has also set out a lengthy plan for a host of sequels that are set to run for years with Avatar 3 planned for 2024. It’s a move that has similarities to the MCU, but with more mixed reviews than 5-star ratings, there’s still a fair amount of expectation for it to come out on Disney+.
The Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and win for Visual Effects has given it another boost. And anticipation creeps up every week that passes by with no official details on the release date for the streaming service.
The trailers have done a pretty good job of building the hype and fans of the original got to see the continuation of the story, so it has got a lot going for it. The opening weekend box office results show the gulf between cinema-goers and reviews and with such stunning visuals and the limited availability of home 3D options the best experience is seeing it on the big screen.

Disney Plus release date
AdvertisementThe Avatar 2 Disney Plus release date has now been confirmed for June 7th, 2023, so it will be streaming in time for the summer mid-term holidays. It’s probably the longest gap for a Disney film in the history of the streaming channel and sets a new precedent for how home media comes out.
It’s impossible to consider the Avatar The Way of Water Disney Plus release date without looking at how things shaped up during its cinema run. With so much expectation on the box office results it had a lengthy stint in theaters to give it enough time to at least get close to the impact of the first film.

What this meant for the Disney Plus release date is that it wasn’t going to be anywhere near as quick to come out as we’ve seen with other films like Strange World. Avatar 2 first arrived in theaters on the 16th December 2022 and if you look at the biggest examples from last year it was theoretically a possibility that it could be mid-to-late February when it comes out on Disney+, but that date came and went a long time ago.
A good recent Disney example is Marvel film Eternals, which came on the 5th November 2022. It also had mixed reviews and while its box office potential wasn’t as high as The Way of Water, it’s got enough of a comparison to be relevant to the sci-fi sequel.
Eternals then went on to be available to stream in mid-January 2022 and it’s been a similar case for the Mouse House throughout the year. Black Panther 2 Wakanda Forever went a similar way, coming out on the streaming network in late January following its November 12th release in cinemas.
AdvertisementHowever, director James Cameron seems to have wanted to give his film as much time as possible in cinemas before the home entertainment release. The longer run worked really well for the likes of other big box office hits like Spider-Man No Way Home and Top Gun 2 Maverick, so it meant we have a longer to wait for The Way of Water to come to Disney+.
The biggest hint we had in terms of when Avatar 2 would be coming out on the streaming network is that it has been released on digital to purchase in North America on March 28th, 2023 and in the UK on April 3rd, 2023. This comes after skipping early access rental altogether, so it looks like they’re trying to get as many sales before giving it away for free to subscribers on Disney Plus.

It seems like the production wants to maximize its success and we’re now looking at late spring/the start of summer for it to stream. It could well be the same for the DVD, Blu-ray and the 4K release, based on the lack of online rental, but we’ll keep you posted on the latest for Disney+.
The Avatar Twitter page announced that the digital version is available to buy at a limited-time low price, which was be a good indicator that the rest of the home media options are on their way.

Will Avatar 2 come out on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime?
AdvertisementThe short answer is no for the most part. For Disney+ competitors, Netflix, it’s the most definitive with Avatar The Way of Water being one of Disney’s big IPs for 2023, so it’s bound to be exclusive to their steaming channel.
It’s a similar story for Amazon Prime Video’s subscription service, which will not get the film as part of the membership. However, Amazon also has the digital store that will allow you to rent or buy the film with similar options on iTunes and the Google Play Store.
If you’re a Hulu subscriber, you’ve got the option of the Disney Bundle, which throws Disney Plus into the mix. If you’ve already got this then everything we said above in terms of when Avatar 2 will come out on Disney+ will apply. If you haven’t got it you can upgrade to the bundle to give you the option to stream the film online as part of your package.

Will the extras and special features be available on Disney Plus?
As things stand, it looks very positive. If you got to watch Avatar in Disney+ and scroll down to the extras you can see that there are lots of special features to watch. This includes Creating the Banshee, Na’vi Costumes, Pandora Flora, Scoring Avatar and Sculpting Avatar.
You might also notice that if you search for Avatar The Way of Water on Disney Plus you can see the trailer right there in the streaming platform. All of this is a pretty good sign that the extras and special features for 2 will be bundled in too.
