Honorary mentions should also go out to Leonard Cohen’s Popular Problems, Pharrell Williams’ G I R L, Mike Oldfield’s Man On The Rocks, The Horrors’ Luminous and Pink Floyd’s Endless River, which didn’t quite make it into our top ten, but still managed to impress in one way or another. They either contained some of the big tracks of the year or resulted in records that grabbed attention, however, the selected albums in our infographic constitute our pick of the very best releases last year; the ones that demand a lot more airtime in the future and can be expected to go on to be looked at as classics.

There’s no specific order to the list as such, but if we were hard pressed to pick out our album of the year, we’d probably have to say Futurology by the Manic Street Preachers. It’s fuelled by a healthy amount of progressive experimentation, which combines well with their distinct alt-rock sound to make a modern day masterpiece from the boys from Blackwood in South Wales. If you haven’t already got it, you probably should, and for anyone that hasn’t listened to their copy for it while, it’s well worth another spin and will be for years to come.

Interpol’s El Pintor is another brilliant return for a much loved band, putting them back to their best with a great new album that lit up a big chunk of 2014. With stunning tracks like All The Rage Back Home, My Desire, Anywhere and Same Town, Different Story it’s got a lot going for it, but it’s the way that it’s all drawn together as a whole is what makes it such a cool record release.

It was also great to see Jack White back again with yet more genius with his second solo album, Lazaretto, but it wasn’t just the old guard that made 2014 what it was as we also had a ratchet shot of a debut album from Hookworms in The Hum. Singles Radio Tokyo and On Leaving are epic in their own rights, but again as a unit the record makes for a lot of great listening.

It was a big year for Damon Albarn who released his first solo album, Everyday Robots, a mere eleven years after the initial breakup of Blur back in 2003. Pixies were also pretty prolific with Indie Cindy, their first full studio album release since Trompe le Monde in 1991, which featured a lot of the tracks previously included on the three EPs they’ve been blasting out over the last couple of years.

For anyone out there questioning the validity of a best of list that combines the Manics, Beck and Wolfmother alongside Taylor Swift’s 1989, point taken, but honestly we can’t get enough of Shake It Off and Blank Space. Equally, we’d argue that you can’t really have a credible top ten albums list without a little full-blown pop thrown in for good measure, and 1989 is just a better record than G I R L overall.
