God of War Ragnarok how to get to Asgard

We’re getting closer and closer to the launch of God of War Ragnarok and having poured over everything released so far by Santa Monica Studios and Sony PlayStation here’s what we know about how to get to Asgard. The hype has been build on this one since the first game in 2018 and with Asgard confirmed as a playable location it comes down to getting there.

However, there will inevitably be some resistance to Kratos and Atreus’ efforts to assault the home of Odin and the rest of the Aesir gods. For a start, the Allfather and his brutish, hammer-wielding son Thor are pretty ticked-off at them after their efforts in God of War.

They were annoyed before the action kicked off last time around with Baldur, another of Odin’s children, arriving at their doorstep as a stranger. They then went on to kill him, along with Magni and Modi (Thor’s sons and Odin’s grandsons), so they’re going to be pretty guarded in the sequel.

If that isn’t enough, the events triggered the early onset of Ragnarok, where the Aesir gods will be destroyed and the world remade. Knowing all of this, Asgard is going to be shut up tighter than a Charles Oliveira anaconda choke, so Kratos and Atreus are going to have their work cut out for them in God of War Ragnarok.

How to get to Asgard (early theory)

With a number of trailers in the bag, we’re starting to put together an initial working theory in terms of how to get to Asgard. The tricky part is trying to puzzle it all together in terms of what part of the mission goes where and how it all fits together.

Based on what we’ve seen, one of your first jobs will be to rescue Tyr from his imprisonment in what appears to be Svartalfheim, the home of the Dwarfs in God of War. You’ll first need to seal an alliance with him and overcome whatever forces are keeping him under lock and key in Svartalfheim, but after that it looks like he’ll be on side.

With that job done, it looks like you’ll need to take Tyr to Alfheim, the home of the elves. As you can see in the story trailer at the bottom of the page, Tyr drags a light elf over one of the light bridges, so it stands to reason that this happens after you break him out of his prison.

The question is what Kratos and Atreus might need Tyr to do in Alfheim and with the scene in the story trailer showing Kratos overshadowing the Light of Alfheim it’s likely to do with this. The key might be to do with the time warping nature of the Light, which went slower for Kratos when he was inside it than for Atreus who was outside it during their first visit to the realm.

We’ve know for a long time that time travel is a big part of the potential story development for God of War Ragnarok, so it’s possible that they need Tyr to unlock it’s flux capacitor settings. This is surely going to trigger events that take place in the past and we’re pretty sure that Santa Monica Studios hasn’t shown any of them as of yet, so it’s pretty veiled at the moment.

Another part of the process to get to Asgard appears to be yet another rescue mission and this time it appears to be Freyr, Freya’s brother and fellow Vanir god. He disappeared shortly before the events of the previous game and we think he’s yet another of Odin’s captives, this time being held in Vanaheim.

It looks like a dark elf is helping you along the way, so it’s possible that the light elves double-crossed Freyr, despite his benevolence. If that’s the case then the events should foretell a reckoning between the two and the addition of Freyr to Kratos and Atreus’ growing list of allies.

This could also be another explanation for why they have to go to Alfheim in the first place. Maybe they needed answers from the light elves in terms of what happened to Freyr before mounting the rescue attempt.

With the Norse god of war and the magical powers of a Vanir god on their side they should at least have enough information about how to get into Asgard. The trailers feature Fenrir, along with Skoll and Hati, who chase the sun and moon, so this is clearly going to play a part in things.

Atreus’ plan is to prevent Ragnarok from coming about, so you could look at the scene where he fires an arrow to release the wolves as a part of that. Another option is that this takes place in the past, so it’s going to be interesting to see how this all pans out.

It’s also pretty clear that Atreus is keeping secrets from his father and it appears as though he has separate conversations with both Freya and Odin. However, we’re pretty sure that the Allfather isn’t going to just let him walk into Asgard as a part of a pact and Freya still looks pretty distraught in the scene, so we’re doubtful she’s going to be their ticket to the realm of the Aesir gods.

With all of this in mind, the logical assumption is that the key to getting into Asgard in God of War Ragnarok will be getting both Tyr and Freyr on side. Tyr has realm travel skills and Freyr has a strong affinity with the Light of Alfheim, so combined these could be the way to bring Kratos and Atreus to the throne-room of Odin and the final boss fight.

More details on how to get to Asgard

recent footage has given away a few more details on how you get to Asgard, but it comes with a mild element of spoiler alerts. If you’re the kind of player that literally doesn’t want to know anything then you really shouldn’t be here at all, so you’ve been warned.

All of that said, here’s what we know. It looks like you get an updated version of fast travel from Ratatoskr, the squirrel that tends the World Tree. He shows you that you can change the settings on the portal doors using special sees that give you access to different locations.

It’s possible that this means that you just need the right seed and you’ll be able to get to Asgard. However, that sounds way too easy and if you’ve played God of War you’ll know that the best laid plans of squirrels and gods do oft go awry.

However, it’s possible that you’ll need to chase this line of attack with the help of Ratatoskr, Tyr and Freyr. This will at least put you on the right path as the story campaign delivers you inevitably to Asgard before the end. This will then eventually allow you to fast travel to and from the realm in the post game after you defeat the final boss.
