Spencer UK release date, age rating and parents guide latest

Biographical tragedy comes to the big screen in 2021 with the Spencer UK release date scheduled for November (details below), so here’s everything we know so far about the film. We’ll include the latest on the age rating, as well as our parents guide to go with the story details, cast and runtime estimate for what’s going to be one of the most talked about films of the month in the UK.

It’s set in the winter of 1991 as the marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles continues to unravel. With rumours of an affair and divorce doing the rounds with the British press, the royal family come together for Christmas at Sandringham as usual with the Queen doing what she can to deal with the storm.

While the story is based on real events, the dramatisation is an imagining of what that winter get together was like told from the point of view of the Princess, who sadly passed away in 1997 when her driver crashed trying to escape from the paparazzi in Paris. We’ll have to wait until the release to see how it all comes together, but you can tell from the trailer that the production felt the weight of expectation and respect.

Cast

Kristen Stewart (Adventureland) takes the leading role as Princess Diana and by the look of the reviews for Spencer, she’s put a lot of time and consideration into the performance. She’s joined by Jack Farthing (Agatha Christie’s Poirot) as Prince Charles, Timothy Spall (The King’s Speech) as Equerry Major Alistair Gregory, Sean Harris (Prometheus) as the head chef, Sallie Hawkins (Godzilla: King of the Monsters) as the royal dresser, and Stella Gonet as the Queen.

Spencer UK release date

Following on from its premier at the Venice Film Festival in September, the Spencer UK release date has now been confirmed for Friday the 5th November 2021. It’s due out in the US and Canada on the same date, but then the story is pretty well known, so there isn’t much in the way of plot protection needed for it.

It’s out on the same weekend as Marvel MCU superhero flick Eternals, so it’s going to be interesting to see which one of them pulls off the number 1 spot at the UK box office. Ordinarily, it would be the Marvel film by a long way, but with a story about Lady Diana it could easily be a tight contest. Oscar Isaac drama The Counter is also out on in the 5th, but we’ll be surprised if it gets close to the other two, despite the positive reviews.

With the November 2021 release on the big screen, it should come out on DVD, Blu-ray and digital in the UK around March 2022, which will give it plenty of time to build momentum for the Easter home entertainment market, especially with the Oscars taking place at the same time. There’s no word as of yet in terms of when it will stream though.

Age rating and parents guide

The official UK age rating for Spencer has been confirmed by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) as 12A. It’s a little unusual for the BBFC to announce the certification for a film so far in advance of the release date, but seeing as this is a British film, it’s possible that the production simply provided a copy for review earlier than usual with the Venice premier and screen at the BFI Film Festival.

Parents guide notes include eating disorder references, self harm and infrequent strong language, which will have contributed to the age rating. There are also sex references and smoking scenes to take into account.

We’ll update you with more details on the film as they get confirmed. You can also check out our movie news section to keep tabs on the latest upcoming films, or visit the Film Nation website at https://filmnation.com.

Runtime

With the screenings at a number of film festivals this year, we already know that the Spencer runtime is approximately 1 hour and 55 minutes.
