A lot of people say that the best things in life are free and while the price tag of the Xbox ONE would go some way to stand against this, the recent release of Girl Band‘s new track, Lawman, for free download it’s definitely the case. It’s a chunky six minutes plus long, so the all-boy Girl Band are throwing in a lot if value for money, especially considering how class the track actually is.
The announcement of the free download comes on the back of a big week for the band with a lot of positive press and initial sales of the limited edition 7″ record of the track. There were just 300 screen printed on cotton duck fabric with hand stitching and individual numbering. However, the free download and gigs would imply that there’s going to be a whole lot more of Girl band to listen to in the not too distant future.
Lawman is a leviathan of sound once it kicks in after the minute or so of patiently swelling drum build-up. When it finally gets up to juggernaut-like inertia with fuzzed noise and distorted heavy riffs that sound like crashing planes, it’s a refreshingly experimental play out. The hard-psych freekout sections are madness incarnate and build to a screaming end before it returns to the class of the chorus sing-out.
Like Nirvana meets Pavement on a night out with Pixies, it’s an eclectic mix that spins together well, which is a surprise when you find out that the band members are 4 dudes in their late teens, early twenties from Dublin.

As we as the free download of Lawman, Girl Band has also announced their first gigs of 2014, to give you an opportunity to listen to their own brand of “wall of noise” live performance. Looking ahead at the year, they’ll be taking in a random train of gigs ranging from London’s The Old Blue Last and Brighton’s The Green Door Store to Cork’s Crane Lane Theatre and Rotterdam’s Poortgebouw.
