Lower Dens, Candy single review

Lower Dens, CandyLower Dens’ latest single, Candy, is cloaked In the deepest pit of a late night indie disco. As a professed love song with self destructive tendencies, the darkened background of the song is perfectly juxtaposed to the surreally sporty video.

It features makeup-dyslexic transvestites swinging in the trees of an outdoor assault course, helmet camera madness and a fair swipe at group trust games. Needless to say, it’s brilliant.

Candy is the third single release from the Baltimore band’s recent album, Nootropics, building on the sheer class of Brains (check out our Lower Dens UK gigs page to see the video). It’s about as pop-noir as you can get, laced with a slow and deliberate pace and a feeling of wilderness isolation.

The heavy bass intro and verse is interlinked with a vaguely disturbing guitar riff that’s piercing and tranquil. The slow wailing guitar solo is ace, giving Candy comparisons to the likes of My Morning Jacket.

Lower Dens’ Candy was released on the 13th August 2012. With only a couple more UK gigs left in the calendar for 2012, the chances to get to see them live are drying up, but if Nootropics, Candy and Brains are anything to go by, it shouldn’t be too long into 2013 before they’re back with more.

Lower Dens, Candy single review: 4.5/5
