The Beguiled UK release date, trailer, story and film details

Colin Farrell and Kirsten Dunst in The Beguiled UK release dateHaving premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, where it was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or, Sophia Coppola’s The Beguiled will be heading to the cinema in the UK in July 2017. The dramatic thriller takes place during the American Civil War, but there’s an equally dark story unfolding within the confines of the girls’ boarding school that it takes place in.

The trailer below looks pretty intense and while it appears to give quite a lot away about the story, we’re expecting the film release to throw in some surprises. Review scores have been almost universally positive, averaging around the 4/5 stars mark, so critics are clearly impressed with the film following its premier at Cannes. Release date

The Beguiled has been confirmed for a UK release date of Friday the 23rd June 2017, following on from its Premier at Cannes on the 24th May 2017. The UK release comes on the same date the film’s arrival at the big screen in the US. It’ll be out of the UK on the same weekend as Transformers: The Last Knight, so will have a fair amount of competition at the box office.

Story

The plot takes place at the Southern girls boarding school as the young women that live there take in injured enemy soldier, Corporal John McBurney (Colin Farrell). The arrival spells trouble from the very beginning and McBurney manages to talk his way into the favour of a number of the women at the school.

However, he hadn’t banked on the dark resolve that he would go on to face as they set out to exact their revenge for his actions. The trailer paints a very grim set of events for John as the scorned women take steps to stop him, but who is the wronged and who is the right in this black mirror scenario?

In addition to Colin Farrell (The Lobster) as Corporal John McBurney, The Beguiled also stars Nicole Kidman (Aquaman) as the school’s charge Miss Martha, along with Kirsten Dunst (Midnight Special) as Edwina and Elle Fanning (Trumbo) as Alicia. The cast also includes an Oona Lawrence (Pete’s Dragon) as Amy, Angourie Rice (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as Jane, Emma Howard is Emily and Addison Riecke as Maria.

Production

Sophia Coppola (Lost In Translation) has directed and written the film, picking up the Best Director award at Cannes 2017 for her efforts. First impressions

The trailer (see below) is pretty intense, with a dark storyline and impressive cast, making The Beguiled a must-watch for serious film fans. Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrel are both finding good form at the moment with two films at Cannes this year 2017 with the other being Yargos Lanthimos’ critically acclaimed The Killing Of A Sacred Dear. The same could be said for Kirsten Dunst who looks like she puts in another excellent performance following the brilliance of Fargo Series 2 and Midnight Special. With the story written and directed by Sophia Coppola The Beguiled looks like it’s going to be one of the year’s best thrillers.
