What next for Daniel Craig after James Bond 25, No Time To Die

What next for Daniel Craig after James Bond 25, No Time To Die

Daniel Craig has put in a big stint as 007, but with his tenure at an end, you might be wondering what comes next for the British actor after Bond 25, No Time To Die. For anyone that hasn’t seen the film yet, we’re not going to include any details of how it all comes to an end here, but from here on in the star and the role are parting ways, so it’s going to be interesting to see what the British actor takes on in the next fifteen years.

We’ll start by covering the projects that have already been announced for Daniel Craig, which could well be an ongoing part if all goes well for the next production. We’ll also include our wish list for the man that helped to reinvent James Bond. With such a lot of his career dedicated to the franchise, he’s definitely had to turn down a few roles along the way, but now he’ll be free to take things on to try different styles of film.

Finally, we’ll also talk about the movies that he did before and during Bond and what they mean for his next few projects. Some of them are absolute gems, but there are also a few that are less than impressive. There’s bound to be a little trial and error to it still, although, he’s bound to have learnt a lot from the productions that he has worked on.

Next films after Bond

Daniel Craig only has Knives Out 2 and 3 confirmed as of yet, but considering they’re both sequels and with the success of the first film, it’s quite possible that we’ll see more of him as Detective Benoit Blanc. They’re both as yet untitled, but with the strength of the name, we’ll be surprised if they don’t include Knives Out somewhere.

It would be very brave to go with something too dissimilar, although, Death on the Nile looks like it’s going to follow Murder on the Orient Express pretty strongly, so that could be a good precedent. The cautionary tale is that Death on the Nile is an internationally recognized Agatha Christie story and Knives Out 2 and 3 will only have the strength of the first film to build on, along with the big name stars involved and Rian Johnson in the director’s chair.

Knives Out 2 looks set to arrive on Netflix in 2022, but we’re also expecting it to get a theatrical release too around the same time, so you don’t have too long to wait to see Daniel Craig on the big screen again. There’s no word as of yet in terms of the third of the films, but there’s bound to be at least a little break, so we might be looking at 2024 or 2025.

By which time, we should have a few more projects announced for the 7th Bond actor. He’s previously taken on everything from drama and action to comedy and mystery, so clearly nothing is off the table. The only thing he hasn’t done as of yet is a superhero role, but we’ll get to that in more detail below.

What we want to see next from Daniel Craig

Arguably, Daniel Craig’s best film before becoming James Bond was Layer Cake, a smart crime thriller with the actor taking on the unnamed lead role. The film, which was Matthew Vaughn’s directorial debut, was as complex as main character, so looking ahead at post No Time To Die it would be great to see him taking on a similar project.

Vaughn is pretty busy with the whole King’s Man thing, so he hasn’t done anything quite as impressive as Layer Cake in recent years, but a collaboration between the two would work well. Wrap it all up in London with a gritty and complex story, great characterization and snappy dialogue and we’ll be happy.

Another option to stay on a similar path would be a collaboration with Guy Ritchie, who returned to form in a big way with The Gentlemen. It featured big names like Matthew McConaughey and Hugh Grant in very different roles than they’re used to, which could work really well for the recently departing Bond star.

Looking back on Daniel Craig’s back catalogue, there hasn’t been a serious acting role that has landed particularly well. He’s an amazing actor, but hasn’t even been nominated for a single Academy Award and his only big award nomination was for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the BAFTAs in 2007 for his Bond debut, Casino Royale. It would be interesting to see him taking on at least the odd one or two serious roles in the coming years to flex his acting skills a bit more.

Finally, action sequences are what he does best, but again looking at his previous films there aren’t any that come close to his performance in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre or No Time To Die. Cowboys and Aliens is about as close as it got and while that was an okay flick, it would be good to see Craig getting an action film that matches the abilities he’s shown in the Bond films.
