Super Mario Bros Movie age rating certificate, UK release date, and more

With the success of the Sonic The Hedgehog films, Nintendo joined the party with The Super Mario Bros Movie UK release date in Spring 2023. We’ll take you through everything you need to know about the film, including the age rating certificate in our parents guide below, plot, cast and runtime.

Plot

Like the live action film from 1993, The Super Mario Bros Movie plot will be an origin story, showing us Mario and Luigi’s first steps into the Mushroom Kingdom. As they’re both plumbers from New York City they manage to find a way between worlds as they’re going about they’re day-to-day job working on pipes.

This sees them stumbling on one that turns out to be portal to the other realm and they discover Princess Peach and the Toads. As you might expect, it doesn’t take long before Bowser wades in and he looks as over-powered as we’ve ever seen him.

The Super Mario movie plot will then focus on the Bros. efforts to train up to take down the big beast fire breathing monster and save the Mushroom Kingdom from his tyranny. You can check out the trailer below to see it in action as Mario tries to get to grips with the powers he gets on the other side.

Cast

The cast list for The Mario Bros Movie was always going to be a bit of a controversial one when it comes to the brothers, so when Chris Pratt got the lead role there were a lot of questions. However, you can hear him in the trailer and he sounds like he does a pretty good job with the whole, “It’s a me… Mario!” business, and you can check out our full no spoilers review with the link above.

At the age of 43, hitting the high notes isn’t something we’d expected, but either he’s got more vocal range than we’d though, or clever computer skills have been able to bridge the gap. Either way, it turns out his casting isn’t as bad as everyone had first thought.

He’s joined by a host of other big names in the cast with Charlie Day playing Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key playing Toad, Seph Rogan as Donkey Kong and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. The darker side of the cast list is led by Jack Black, who takes on the role of Bowser, along with Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

We’ll update you with more details about the cast list and those cameos that Shigeru Miyamoto talked about in the Nintendo Direct presentation when we know more. The Super Mario Bros Movie UK release date

The Super Mario Movie UK release date took pace on April 5th, 2023, which is the same date it came out in North America. It puts it in a strong place to be the Easter number one movie as it lands just in time for the spring holidays.

The good news for Nintendo and Illumination is that there aren’t any other big films out in the UK or US that weekend. As a result, everything is set up for it to land big at the box office and with a strong trailer, big-name cast and the movie and gaming superpowers behind it everything is looking pretty positive.

The biggest films out before Easter are John Wick Chapter 4, which comes out two weeks earlier, and Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves, which has a release date the weekend before The Super Mario Bros Movie. John Wick 4 has a very different audience and the Dungeons and Dragons trailer hasn’t been that well received, so Mario looks like a sure win.

Following its stint on the big screen, we should get the DVD, Blu-ray and standard digital release date around the end of summer 2023. It’ll be interesting to see when the home premier/early access rental and purchase options land, because we’ve seen these getting bigger gaps in recent months.

Age rating and parents guide

The official The Super Mario Movie age rating for both the UK and North America has now been confirmed and it’s a PG on both sides of the Atlantic. It builds on what we knew about the certificate from the trailer, previous Illumination films and other animated computer games crossovers like The Sonic The Hedgehog movies.

The trailer includes a little animated threat with Bowser being the big bad in the film, but other than that we’re expecting the film to be lighthearted fun for the most part. It seems to have followed the family fun direction of other Illumination movies like Minions 2 The Rise of Gru, which had a certification of U in the UK and PG in the US, but clearly the BBFC upped it a little for the British release.

The difference between The Mario Bros Movie age rating and Sonic The Hedgehog The Movie 2 is that the latter included live action, which the former won’t have. It picked up a PG certificate in the UK and America, but it had a few more older scenes than we were expecting from the Mario adaptation.

That didn’t stop the age rating from landing as a PG, and it appears to be the mild violence and threat that tipped the balance, so it isn’t as much of a strong fit for younger kids as Minions 2 was. Bowser is pretty ferocious in the trailer, but having stakes in a film like this should help it in terms of reviews.

Runtime

Animated films tend to be on the shorter side of the spectrum, and that’s the case for The Super Mario Movie which has clocked in at 1 hour and 32 minutes long. It’s a little longer than the likes of Minions 2, which was 1 hour and 28 minutes, but what’s four minutes between animated buddies.

Trailer

There was a lot riding on the trailer and now that it has landed well it looks like we can all sit back and look forward to the film. The training montage looks like a lot of fun where Mario gets to take on a classic course for the first time.

If that isn’t enough, there’s also the sheer impact of Bowser to take into account. He’s got some beefy powers that are going to take a lot to defeat, so there’s a lot packed into The Super Mario Bros movie.

The final trailer also added in some Mario Kart fun into the mix, so it definitely looks like Nintendo and Illumination is throwing the kitchen sink at the film. We’ve also had our first look at Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong and like jack Black and Chris Pratt it seems like he might be a win too.
